Common DIY Plumbing Mistakes

Posted by [email protected] on May 3, 2020 at 9:50 AM

Are you the kind of person who loves DIY? Before consider doing a DIY plumbing repair, see to it that you don't make the mistakes listed in this article.

Not Shutting Off the Water

Do not make the mistake of not turning off the water valve. Some have done this because they forgot. Some also did not turn off their water because they think the repair job is easy and can be finished as quickly as possible. What they don't know is that it can cause serious leak and flooding inside your home. I am sure you don't want your home flooded with water. Shutting off the water can only consume a few minutes of your time, whereas fixing and cleaning flooded property can take you an entire day. This may also cost you hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars if it happened to ruin your property and appliances. Even professional plumbers shut water before doing any repair. I strongly suggest that a DIYer like you should do it too.

Overtightening the Connections

A lot of homeowners considering to do a DIY on their plumbing repairs make this mistake. Keep in mind, if you overtighten connections of your pipes it may result in cracked fittings. The moment you tighten it too much, it won't cause the crack immediately. However, over time, it can break the fittings and will cause leaks and bursts.

According to a plumber in Bradenton, FL, jobs like this need skills and knowledge. So, it is best to call a professional plumber if you are not knowledgeable enough with the repair to avoid causing more damage.

Not Preparing Any Spare Parts

Are you planning to do a repair in your faucet with just a washer on-hand? This is a mistake most DIYers make when repairing a faucet. It is common for other parts of your faucet to be worn out if your washer is also worn out. If you don't want a leaky faucet, replace other parts as well instead of just the washer. This is not only applicable to faucet repairs, but this is also applicable to other repairs you want to do on your own. To avoid another trip to the hardware and to save you time disassembling and reassembling, always make sure you have spare parts with you.

Not Having the Right Plumbing Tools

You may have seen a plumber once and you saw that the job was easily done. That may be true but it is because of the tools they have on hand. You will not be able to do the job properly if you don't have the right tools. Different pipes require different tools to remove it. The same goes for other parts of your plumbing system. Most DIYers make the mistake of doing repairs without the right tools.
